A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics revealed that over 95,000 kids have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus within the last couple of weeks in the month of July. With schools making plans to re-open all over the country, what does this mean as it pertains to the safety of our children amidst this deadly pandemic? It seems as if many people have all but forgotten the mortality rate thus far for this virus, and some have completely disregarded basic protection techniques such as social distancing and wearing a face mask. Wearing a mask has almost completely been politicized and used as a point of derision amongst citizens. What is it going to take to impress the severity of the situation onto the United States as a whole? I think that it's safe to say that the our idea of 'normalcy' is never going to return, and maybe that's a positive in the grand scheme of things. This could be the wake up call we need to address critical issues identified within our healthcare system and sanitation (personal and community/city/state/country-wide). If we are able to learn from this pandemic experience and put certain measures in place for better prevention and preparedness overall, we could come out of this stronger and more capable to handle these situations in the future.
